Unilever was recently at the center of a lawsuit alleging certain Tresemmé products could be dangerous.
What kind of shampoo do you use? If it’s Tresemmé, you should pick a new favorite. Unilever was recently targeted in a nationwide class action lawsuit on allegations that “some of its Tresemmé products allegedly cause hair loss”. The suit states:
Plaintiff bought the products because of Unilever’s consistent misrepresentation that the products would straighten her hair and coat it with keratin, a protein found naturally in hair. The products contain an ingredient or combination of ingredients that, when used correctly, cause significant hair loss and / or scalp irritation. “

For example, one ingredient, a formaldehyde-releasing preservative, DMDM-hydantoin, was found in Tresemmé Keratin Hair Smoothing Shampoo and TRESemme Keratin Smooth Color Shampoo. According to ChemicalSafetyFacts.org, DMDM hydantoin is “a preservative in cosmetics and personal care products that slows down and prevents spoilage in products such as shampoos and hair conditioners, as well as in skin care products such as moisturizers and makeup foundations.” The website also advises that the product is safe and states:
“As a cosmetic ingredient, DMDM hydantoin is safe for normal use in products at present, according to the scientific experts at Cosmetics Directive of the European Union as well as an independent Review of cosmetic ingredients Panel … To put the formaldehyde exposure of DMDM hydantoin in personal care products in perspective, the small amount of formaldehyde released by a formaldehyde dispenser when washing your hair is roughly the same as the amount of formaldehyde found naturally in a medium-sized apple or a pear. “
However, the suit argues that “formaldehyde has adverse reactions when it is absorbed by the skin”. It goes on to say:
“Formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen that, when absorbed into the skin, can cause cancer and other harmful reactions. DMDM hydantoin has been used as a preservative in Unilever products for more than a decade. However, using DMDM hydantoin as a preservative is a completely unnecessary risk as various safer natural alternatives exist. Therefore, as over-the-counter shampoo products for hair straightening, the products are dangerous and unsafe. “
The lawsuit also argues that the defendants did not warn consumers of the dangers and risks of using the products on their hair “even long after the defendants knew or should have known the dangers of the products”.
In response to the allegations, Tresemmé made the following statement:
“Consumer safety is always our top priority, and all TRESemme products are rigorously tested to meet strict safety standards. While we do not comment on any pending litigation, DMDM hydantoin is widely used in the beauty industry and has been endorsed by health authorities as a safe and effective preservative. “
