Chennai: With overthrown AIADMK leader VK Sasikala expected to be released from prison on January 27th, her lawyer is expected to complete all legal formalities for her release by today, as tomorrow is a public holiday.

Sasikala, a close advisor to the late Tamil Nadu Prime Minister J Jayalalithaa, is currently being admitted to a hospital in Bengaluru for COVID-19 complications.

The designated AIADMK director, who has been housed in a corruption case at Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in Bengaluru since February 2017, was admitted to the Bowring and Lady Curzon Medical College and Research Institute last week after complaining of fever and shortness of breath.

The 66-year-old was later moved to Victoria Hospital in Karnataka’s capital by prison authorities.

Sasikala is expected to be released on January 27th

Sasikala is expected to be released on January 27 after serving four years in prison on disproportionate assets of Rs 66.

According to the hospital’s latest bulletin, Sasikala is stable and comfortable and usually takes oral food. “She is now walking with support. It will be handled according to the standard protocol for COVID-19. She is under constant surveillance, “the hospital said in a statement.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK Joint Coordinator K Palaniswami recently said that Sasikala would not be accepted into the party.

IT action against Sasikala

In 2019, the Income Tax Department had rupees 1,600 worth of land owned by the former AIADMK leader under the terms of the Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Act.

Last year, the Income Tax (IT) department had hooked up about 65 properties owned by Sasikala and its employees in Chennai.

In 2017, the Income Tax Department searched around 187 properties believed to be related to Sasikala and her relatives. They also discovered alleged tax evasion of around 1,430 rupees.
