Trump attorneys believe Giuliani bid to overturn election is 'deranged'

Lawyers working on the Trump campaign said Rudy Giuliani was “distraught” and ill-prepared to lead legal efforts to reverse the election result, the Washington Post reported on Sunday.

In a deep dive into the Trump campaign’s unprecedented attempt to reverse the election result, the Post reports that a rift has developed in the campaign’s legal team in early November.

A turning point was reportedly a November 13 defeat in the U.S. 3rd District Court of Appeals in Pennsylvania, where a judge dismissed the Trump campaign’s offer to invalidate thousands of postal ballot papers received after election day.

Following the outcome, some of the campaign’s key lawyers began to turn their backs on efforts to discard the outcome, believing that this signaled the end of the campaign’s offer to credibly challenge the votes. But Giuliani, the president’s personal lawyer, kept fighting.

Giuliani’s efforts to reverse the election result were at times ridiculous. The former New York mayor held a press conference in a suburban garden center where the booking locations were obviously mixed up. At a press conference on November 19, black liquid was seen dripping down Giuliani’s face, and campaign colleague Sidney Powell claimed a major conspiracy to overthrow elections with Venezuelan communists and democrats.

Neither she nor Giuliani have produced convincing evidence to support the claim, and the campaign has parted ways with Powell.

According to the Post, some of the campaign and GOP lawyers involved in the election challenge distanced themselves from Giuliani in early November and tried to avoid meeting Giuliani and his team. When Giuliani and Powell were asked for evidence by other campaign officials to support their fraud claims, they were unable to produce it.

Some lawyers described Giuliani as “disturbed” in comments on the Post.

Giuliani clashed with other Trump campaign lawyers, according to the report, continuing to tell the president that he had a serious chance of winning his lawsuits, while other officials came forward with more realistic assessments. Trump handed control of the legal effort to Giuliani and his team after Nov. 13.

A senior administrator pondered Giuliani’s strategy. “Just roll everyone who is willing to do this into a clown car and when it’s time for a press conference, roll them out,” the official characterized the Post.

The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Giuliani’s conspiracy theories have reportedly proven too much even for Trump, and while he continues to claim the election was stolen from him, he has approved the release of vital funds for Biden’s transition.
