The Justice Department recognized District Attorney Melissa Nelson and the District Attorney’s Office for their ongoing efforts in the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative with the Outstanding Local Prosecutor’s Office Award.
The award, presented on December 16, was one of two awarded to a US prosecutor
“This is an incredible honor for this office and a testament to the hard work of everyone who has focused their careers on making our community a safer place,” Nelson said in a press release.
“Public safety is the culmination of leadership, vision, and commitment to improving the quality of life in your community. Melissa Nelson has achieved all three, “said US attorney for the Middle District of Florida, Maria Chapa Lopez, in a press release.
“The success of Project Safe Neighborhoods in Northeast Florida is directly due to their ability to bring their offices, critical agencies, and community partners to a common goal – creating safe communities.”
The Project Safe Neighborhood initiative brings together law enforcement agencies at all levels to reduce violent crime, prosecute those who perpetrate violence in the community, and make neighborhoods safer.
Nelson’s office championed the Crime Gun Intelligence Center and worked with the City Council and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office to open the center in May 2019. It consists of members of the Bureau for Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and JSO who work with the Office’s Targeted Prosecution Unit and US Attorney’s Office for Combating Gun Crimes.
