Spokeswoman Nancy Pelosi shocked many in Washington by appointing Eric Swalwell to be the caretaker for President Donald Trump’s impeachment on the grounds of his alleged close relationship with a Chinese spy continuing to demand his removal from the House Intelligence Committee. Swalwell has been bunkered to avoid media and public questions, but he will now be one of those pursuing the case against the president.
He is said to have met the spy Fang Fang or Christine Fang for the first time in 2011. Not only did she raise money for Swalwell, but she reportedly had a personal relationship with him. She also successfully pushed for his office to accept an intern. He split from her in 2015 after the FBI contacted him. Pelosi made no mention of the scandal when announcing Swalwell’s testimonies:
“Congressman Swalwell is a member of the House Intelligence Standing Committee, where he chairs the Intelligence Modernization and Readiness Subcommittee and the Judiciary Committee,” said a statement from Pelosi’s office. “He is a former prosecutor and the son and brother of law enforcement officers. He is serving his fifth term in Congress. “
Typically, a speaker selects property managers in order to increase the credibility and integrity of the case against a president. Even before the current scandal, Swalwell was viewed as a member who was a raw partisan. Last year it became known that the FBI (despite a long rejection) sent an agent to report on its observations as part of the Trump campaign. As I discussed in a column, Democratic members have for years made fun of allegations that Trump or his campaign was being spied on or monitored by the FBI. It was just a conspiracy theory. However, there is now evidence that the FBI used a briefing from then-candidate Trump in August 2016 to gather information for the Russian investigation into “Crossfire Hurricane”. It turns out it didn’t really matter after all, and Rep. Eric Swalwell never missed a step. Swalwell stated that such an alignment of the opposing party and its leading presidential candidate was “the right thing”. That’s it. A conspiracy theory suddenly becomes a laudable act.
Earlier, Swalwell also stated that if President Donald Trump refused to give Congress the documents and witnesses he requested, he would be clearly guilty of all of the criminal offenses charged. Swalwell stated, “We can only conclude that you are guilty.”
Swalwell’s selection is clearly part of a rehabilitation campaign. Swalwell remained withdrawn when the many media outlets refused to carry the story, let alone investigate it. A member of the House Intelligence Committee had a close relationship with a Chinese spy, but the mainstream media largely obscured coverage, as it did with the Hunter Biden story. Now Pelosi will use the impeachment so Swalwell can emerge from the seclusion. . . as prosecutor and prosecutor for President Donald Trump.
While there are good faith reasons for impeachment, serious questions remain about the speed and basis of impeachment. My primary concern is to use a quick impeachment process without a hearing to discuss the implications of this measure. That makes the property managers even more important to give credibility to these efforts. In my opinion, this brings politics to the institution.
