President-elect Joe Biden’s transition announced on Wednesday that his son Hunter is under investigation for his taxes by the US law firm in Delaware.
Hunter Biden was the focus of Republican complaints during the Ukraine-China Do Business Campaign. But Hunter Biden was not charged, and two Republican-led congressional committees found no wrongdoing on the part of Joe Biden in September.
Political opponents such as President Donald Trump accused the former vice president of profiting from his son’s business. But Joe Biden denied any illegal or unethical dealings with his son.
Hunter Biden said Wednesday he learned Tuesday that federal prosecutors were investigating his tax affairs.
“I take this matter very seriously, but I am confident that a professional and objective review of these matters will show that I have handled my affairs legally and appropriately, with the benefit of professional tax advisors,” Hunter Biden said in a statement.
Biden’s transition office said in a statement that the president-elect “is deeply proud of my son who has overcome difficult challenges, including the vicious personal attacks of the past few months, to appear strengthened.”
Trump’s personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani, said in the last few weeks of the campaign that a laptop recovered from a Delaware repair shop allegedly revealed a wealth of evidence against Hunter Biden. However, the FBI investigated the laptop as a possible misinformation from Russia in order to influence the election.
An October 14 story in the New York Post accused Biden’s son of corruption over his work as a consultant to the Ukrainian energy company Burisma.
But the story – based on material from the laptop – has come under fire for relying on questionable sources and documents.
A central point of the article relates to an email from Vadym Pozharskyi, an advisor to Burisma, who thanked Hunter Biden for “giving him the opportunity to meet your father and spend some time together.” If so, the claim would undermine Joe Biden’s repeated claims that he never spoke to his son about doing business in Ukraine.
But the Biden campaign categorically denied that a meeting ever took place. “They never had a meeting,” Andrew Bates, a campaign spokesman, told USA TODAY. “I’ve literally never heard of this guy in my life,” Amos Hochstein, a former Biden employee, told Politico.
Rep. Ken Buck, R-Colo., Had asked the Justice Department on Monday to appoint a special lawyer to investigate Hunter Biden via the laptop. “This needs to be investigated without political interference,” Buck said in a tweet. “No matter who is in the White House.”
The House indicted Trump and the Senate acquitted him of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress after an investigation was based in part on a 2019 appeal by Trump to the President of Ukraine asking him to investigate the Bidens.
Congressional Democrats, pursuing the charges to force Trump out of office, called the request for an investigation a smear test from Trump’s political opponent.
Trump repeatedly taunted Biden via the laptop during the campaign. “Joe Biden is a corrupt politician and everyone knows it,” Trump said in a tweet. “Laptop is devastating!” Said Trump in another tweet.
Biden told reporters he had received no response to the allegations in the days following the New York Post story. “Another smear campaign,” said Biden. “Right in your alley.”
In the first presidential debate on Fox News, Trump accused Hunter Biden of being kicked out of the military for cocaine use and later paid millions in Ukraine and China without work. But Biden said his son was not dishonorably dismissed and the allegations against him had been debunked.
“My son, like many people at home, had a drug problem,” said Joe Biden. “He fixed it. He worked on it. And I’m proud of him. I am proud of my son. “
The former vice president recently reported that Trump has a secret bank account in China. “He’s talking about me taking money from China? I didn’t take a penny from any country. Ever. Ever. Ever. “
“Nothing was unethical,” said Joe Biden of Hunter Biden’s role on the board of the Ukrainian energy company Burisma. “My son didn’t make money from China. The only man who made money from China was this man,” he said. Direct his comments on Trump.
