There’s a new prosecutor in town. Keith Higgins took the oath of office as newly elected District Attorney for Brunswick on Monday, with Glynn County Supreme Court Justice Stephen Kelley presiding over a swearing-in ceremony in Selden Park.
The ceremony took place in the park’s gymnasium, which was large enough to hold the socially distant crowd of family members, supporters, and community leaders who attended. Everyone in attendance was masked in accordance with COVID-19 Pandemic Precautions.
His first official day as the senior law enforcement officer in the five-district judiciary is January 4th. The office and its team of attorneys and investigators are responsible for prosecuting criminal cases, advising law enforcement and deciding which cases to handle in the court.
The independent candidate defeated incumbent prosecutor Jackie Johnson in the November election to win 52.8 percent of the vote in a highly competitive race. Higgins earned 8,500 signatures, more than double the amount required to serve as an independent contributor for the position.
“I would like to thank everyone who worked tirelessly to put me on the vote and get me elected,” said Higgins. “I want you to know that I still need your help, along with the help of everyone else on this route.”
Higgins has served as a lawyer in Glynn County for more than 30 years, both as a defense attorney and assistant to the prosecutor with the Brunswick District Attorney for 23 years. The graduate of Mercer Law School has been in private practice for 10 years.
The Brunswick Judicial Circuit includes counties of Glynn, Camden, Appling, Jeff Davis, and Wayne. Higgins said he would set up citizens’ councils for each county to better understand each individual’s problems and needs.
Higgins forms his team of prosecutors and administrators. The trials will begin in January for the first time in 10 months.
The DA office will be affected by a significant backlog of cases postponed due to COVID-19 cases.
To meet social distancing requirements, the Glynn County’s Supreme Court jury selection will take place at Selden Park High School, where Higgins took his oath of office.
