Attorneys For Harvey Weinstein Search To Have Grand Jury Transcripts Sealed – CBS Los Angeles

Los Angeles (CBSLA) – Defenders for disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein have asked a judge to seal the grand jury’s transcripts and exhibits as their release could affect his right to a fair trial on sexual charges against five women.

“Few cases in recent history have attracted as much and intensity of press, public scrutiny and media hype as the current case,” Weinstein’s lawyers wrote in a court file on Thursday. “From the moment the allegations were made against Mr. Weinstein and before charges were brought in New York or California, the media lightning bolt around the case worked quickly to make Mr. Weinstein’s name practically synonymous with misconduct and abuse.”

The defense claims the grand jury’s transcripts and exhibits contain “very personal and invasive details about Mr. Weinstein’s medical and psychological history, and even intimate details about his physical body and anatomy”, further claiming that “the focus and control be strengthened while the community is already “. Inundated and saturated with news of this case, Mr. Weinstein will continue to spare him prejudice as it will be so much more difficult to find an impartial jury. “

69-year-old Weinstein was extradited from New York to Los Angeles on July 20, where he was sentenced to 23 years in prison for rape of an aspiring actress and criminal sex act against a former production assistant.

Weinstein pleaded not guilty to the charges, including four cases each of violent rape and violent oral copulation, two cases of sexual violence by restraint, and one case of sexual penetration by force the day after his extradition.

At a hearing on Thursday, a judge denied the defense’s motion to dismiss two of the charges against Weinstein, but agreed to allow prosecutors to amend a third charge challenged by the defense.
